The Pūtake Nui Education to Employment Vocational Brokerage service is contracted by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and is aimed at secondary school students. The ultimate goals of the Education to Employment Vocational Brokerage service are:
- to increase the number of students transitioning into higher education, training and employment within sustainable careers in their local labour market;
- to reduce the numbers of youth Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET);
- to support regional economic prosperity.
The Education to Employment Vocational Brokerage service represents an initiative of the current Government to raise the profile of vocational education and its place as a highly desirable pathway. The service provides an effective service for all secondary school students to enable them to consider vocational education as a pathway into employment. It encourages and supports the coordination and support of employers and the local business community to be involved in vocational education, employment and development opportunities for young people. It increases the awareness of and access of young people to vocational education prospects for future careers in trades.
Pūtake Nui is initiated from the Rotorua Working Together Forum – a forum of local and central government, social sector initiatives & community. Pūtake Nui is a new way of working together in Rotorua with rangatahi, whanau, NGOs, local and central government, iwi and hapū and the wider community. The aim of Pūtake Nui is to engage rangatahi in positive pathways and support them, through a community of impact approach (rather than the old silo approach), to reach their full potential. Pūtake Nui collectively applied for the Education to Employment Vocational Brokerage service, which includes a position hosted by the Rotorua Community Youth Centre. On Monday the 8th of June, Tina Mischewski began in this brand-new brokerage role aiming to close the gap between education and employment for Rotorua Rangatahi.
As the Education to Employment Vocational Broker Tina Mischewski will implement and model the Pūtake Nui way of working through her role as the Education to Employment Vocational Broker. Tina will be building relationships with staff and students at schools; industry and training organisations; iwi and hapū, employers/business community, Rotorua Youth Employment Services; all in the context of Pūtake Nui.
The four kokonga that support this model are to ensure a youth centric approach putting young people at the centre of what is planned and delivered. Act early, Act together and respond to the needs of the young person as soon as the need emerges; Rangatahi with aspirations – allowing young people to dream, develop a pathway and to achieve their goals; Rangatahi wellbeing so they can engage positively in life.
To implement and model the Pūtake Nui way of working we all need to work together to engage rangatahi in positive pathways so they can reach and achieve their full potential. This requires culture and systems change within and between Industry, Business Sector and Employment Providers (including Rotorua Economic Development, Rotorua, Chamber of Commerce, Rotorua X, Industry/trade providers, and Employment Brokerage Services.
