Creating a community of impact ‘eco-system’, supporting and empowering young people (15-24)

Youth Employment Plus – Rotorua has been officially launched in Rotorua to prepare young people for employment by providing tailored skills training and wrap-around support for Rotorua young people. Underpinned by the approach taken by Rotorua’s Pūtake Nui collective Youth Employment Plus – Rotorua will see local service providers collaborating for collective impact that supports and empowers young people by collaborating with other services to provide a targeted and holistic vocational pathway with activities and programmes designed to build capability and resilience.

Youth Employment Plus – Rotorua will collaborate with partner agencies and services to identify and recruit young NEETs (young people aged 15-24 not in education, employment or training) or young people at high risk of becoming NEET.

Participants will undergo an extensive assessment to gauge their needs and will be matched with a Youth Worker Navigator who will mentor, coach and support them through the programme, also building relationships with whanau where possible.

Aspirations will be identified, goals set and a plan tailored to their needs will be developed with support required to achieve the plan identified and other agencies and services involved where appropriate.

Young people will be supported to develop key employability skills including by attending:

  • Individual mentoring, support and coaching;
  • Licence to Work employability programme with other young people;
  • Workshops as appropriate (eg CV development, interview skills, job searching, speaking with confidence, building confidence and resilience, achieving health and wellbeing);
  • Opportunities such as volunteering, work experience or other programmes.

Events like ‘industry nights’ and ‘speed meets’ will connect young people to employers and work integrated learning models will be developed with Toi Ohomai and other tertiary and industry training organisations.

Driver licensing, literacy and numeracy training, budgeting, first aid skills and other skills training will be provided as needed.

Each young person on the programme will be enrolled in the Rotorua Community Youth Centre Trust’s preferred online platform YouthHub which enables youth to build their personal brand and showcase their experience, skills, interests and aspirations to employers, education providers and volunteer organisations. It also provides access to opportunities for work experience, internships, volunteerism training and jobs. YouthHub currently features of the profiles of 1400 young people, 82 employers and membership includes multiple support organisations and service providers.

The programme will also provide support for employers, identifying and securing work opportunities, ensuring ongoing learning and development are in place for young people who are employed and supporting employers to be ‘youth ready’.

Cultural and Māori responsiveness will be essential to the success of the programme which will be underpinned by the guiding values of whakawhanaungatanga, whakapapa, wairuatanga and manaakitanga.
